We are living a dictatorship of the judiciary (Brazilians Say)

Deputy Mayor of Porto Alegre, Ricardo Gomes, spoke at a forum held by PUC-RS

During the 36th Freedom Forum, held last week at PUC-RS, the deputy mayor of Porto Alegre, Ricardo Gomes, stated that Brazil is experiencing “a dictatorship of the Judiciary”.

“The history of liberalism is one of submitting power to the Law and the exercise of the State to the law”, stated Gomes. “We are past the stage of judicial activism in Brazil. Our problem is the absence of the rule of law, due process, freedom of expression.”

Gomes cited some decisions by ministers of the Federal Supreme Court, which he saw as “unconstitutional”. “If there is a supreme power in the country, let’s tear up the idea of the Rule of Law, which says that all power emanates from the people, but that this power is controlled by the law”, noted the deputy mayor.

When speaking, Gomes emphasized that his speech, according to which Brazil is experiencing a dictatorship of the Judiciary, was given as a former president of the Liberal Institute, and not as vice-mayor of Porto Alegre.

In addition to Gomes, federal deputy Marcel van Hattem participated in the event. The parliamentarian repudiated the attack on Praça dos Três Poderes, on January 8, but criticized Minister Alexandre de Moraes, for arresting 1,500 people. “All the arrests were illegal”, observed the congressman, while also mentioning the governor of the Federal District (DF), Ibaneis Rocha, and Anderson Torres, former Secretary of Security for the DF.
